Many Minnesotans miss out on tax credits because they don't know they qualify. If you rent your home, support children, or have low income, you may qualify for a tax credit. An income tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of the taxes you owe. They can lower your tax bill and give you a bigger refund. They can be refundable, nonrefundable, or partially refundable.
How do I know if I qualify?
You need to meet eligibility requirements. These are things like having a certain amount of income, your filing status and if you have dependents. Learn more on the Minnesota Department of Revenue website.
What types of credits are there?
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Family Credit
- K-12 Education Credit
- Renter's Credit
- Homestead Credit Refund (for homeowners)
- More federal tax credit options can be found on the IRS website.
Important: Even if your income isn't enough to file a tax return, you need to file in order to claim a tax credit.
